Client: The Lounge, Cardiff University Students Union
Services Provided: Concept Design, Detailed Design, Project Management
The Lounge was officially opened on 14 November 2011 by Cardiff’s Vice-Chancellor Dr David Grant who thanked GMP for delivery of the project. The state-of-the-art lounge in Cardiff University’s Students Union features some of GMP’s tailor-made products such as a touch-screen kitchen table and numerous VOIP Pods.
The Lounge offers a variety of spaces for students. Amongst its features are secluded zones providing a relaxed, personal space for students to browse the internet and Skype home. A giant interactive map of the world complete with images from students’ homelands is a focal point for The Lounge and comes with LED lighting which is programmed to sync with the movement of the sun, giving a visual indication of the time in different global regions.
GMP’s unique ‘Windows of the World’ display concept and projection screens have been incorporated into two meeting rooms, and larger booths which can sit up to four people are ideal for study groups who want to meet informally. Flexible modular seating in The Lounge also makes the space easily adaptable for larger meetings and conferences.
Amongst the innovative features incorporated into the scheme include wireless charge points for phones and laptops, and a meeting kitchen complete with an interactive touch-screen table for Minority-Report style presentations.
Speaking about The Lounge, Lead Designer Darren Aspinall said “This was one of the most exciting projects we have undertaken in recent years. It is refreshing to see the university’s willingness to invest in a space that is truly reflective of the needs of its students. As well as having a clear brief, they were very open to the numerous innovative features which we proposed. I think this development will help in strengthening Cardiff’s position as a forward-thinking UK university.”
