The GMP Internship Programme.
The GMP intern programme is recognised by design industry peers as one of the best training platforms in the UK; GMP’s interns have gone on to greatness and indeed have become directors of some of the UK’s leading leisure design practices.
We have been developing the Intern Programme for the past five years and now see many of our interns achieving a diploma in professional practice once they’ve completed their 1st year. Year 1 is a full-time intensive learning programme starting no later than July. In Years 2 & 3 the intern returns to University part-time to complete the final part of their degree.
Students complete their 2nd year of BA study and come to GMP on a 3 year design journey, opting to complete their final year of study over a three-year period (with sponsorship available). We are very proud to announce that all interns that completed the training have gone on to achieve an upper 2nd or 1st class degree.

What some of our interns have said:
“During my internship at GMP I have evolved from a student achieving the bare minimum at university, to a professional designer reaching the highest quality in everything I do. The GMP learning programme has given me the opportunity to partake in projects worldwide and has taught me the invaluable skills required to become successful in the working world.” Richard Berrington – Derby University
“I spent the whole summer looking for a position within a commercial company to complete as part of my Placement year as a Student at the University of Huddersfield. It wasn’t my intent to live away as part of my placement year and I had been looking more locally or at least within the Manchester Area. With around a month to go I spoke to Neil Morton at GMP and was really interested in what the company did. He told me to pack a bag and head down that weekend for an interview and to see if I would fit in within the company.
A few months later and 18 years old I was renting a house in Staffordshire and working comfortably within the company. The experience I gained was invaluable. I learnt a range of skills from being thrown into an office environment with the usual tasks stretching through to attending Site Visits on many of the live projects we had going at the time. My concept skills, knowledge of building and fire regulations and industry experience grew and
I was very lucky to be given the reigns to design my very own refurbishment project and watch it be built before my eyes right through to the opening night. The hands-on site element was really useful coming from a classroom environment and I would urge anyone wanting to learn to take the opportunity of a placement with GMP. It boosted my confidence to go back to university knowing what I was doing and I know I would not have achieved the grade without the placement.” Beth Kost – Huddersfield University
"We were novice operators when we first approached GMP. Their guidance and straight talking approach was very helpful. We completed our £45,000 project in time to open for Christmas 2012. Neil Morten then attended our site on a follow up visit and helped us improve our back bar merchandising at no charge. We were so impressed with GMP they've now been appointed to design our 30 bedroom boutique hotel." Okey Nwosu - Manager, Dreams Hotel, Real Dreams Leisure
"During my time as Operations Director for Ministry of Sound we embarked upon a project to develop a new bar concept which was to be called Minibar. Having identified a potential site for development, a number of highly regarded design consultants were asked to respond to the project brief, one of which was Neil Morten of GMP. This was not an easy task due to a challenging building. GMP were the only company to satisfy every aspect of the design brief and hence won the contract." Tony Rigg - Operations Director, Ministry of Sound
"GMP are experts in dealing with customers from a different country. They quickly understand the cultural differences and deliver outstanding projects, so much so that their VIP lounge in Singapore now has the largest champagne sales in East Asia." Peter Bowden - Project Director, Ministry Of Sound, World Wide Clubs Ltd
"I have worked with GMP for the past 15 years, they are always able to think outside the box in order to find great value for money. The GMP team give great bang for the buck and their interior design skills are definitely part of the reason we regularly appear in the top five of the Sunday Times’ student experience poll." Andy Parsons - General Manager, Loughborough Students Union
"GMP's knowledge of the UK club market & vision for the future was a revelation. We appointed GMP on the spot and commissioned them to create the new direction for our venue. The scheme they came up with was Brilliant and blew us away. Their Managing Director suggested that we join the newly formed BIOBC (British Independent Operators Buying Consortium) as they could potentially raise us brand funding - they raised us nearly 20k. We are so pleased with GMP that we have recommended them to a number of other operators." David King - Club 195, Epping
"GMP were recommended to me by the project team at The Chicago Rock Cafe. From the moment we met the team we felt instantly at ease; we gave them our budget and they delivered far further than expectations. Their nightclub design looked like a London club, however it was done on a shoe string budget. GMP truly are the experts in the art of the sparkle spend. We are so pleased with GMP that we have commissioned them again to deal with our next venue in Nuneaton." Panos Toulouras - Manager, Club Sosho, Leicester
"We have been working with GMP every summer for the past three years. Fantastically creative, GMP really understand the student market - and more importantly - its recent changes. The presentation work they produced to assist us in raising University funding is brilliant and goes a long way towards getting a project to the starting line. This summer GMP delivered yet again and we'll be using them again for our next project." Ben Eagle - Cardiff University Students Union
"I discovered GMP via a Google search when I was investigating the feasibility of my site in Kettering. The team were very quick to respond and met me on site within a few days. The advice I received during our initial meeting was so in-depth I was able to write my business plan in a matter of days. Their knowledge about the late-night leisure business was excellent." Michael Justice - London
